DAVID DECIDED not to let Amy ruin his Sunday. In the afternoon, after he came back from running, Leslie wanted to stay home and cook a nice dinner and David took Jessica to the Museum of Natural History. She had outgrown her obsession with dinosaurs a few years ago and was now fascinated by the ecosystem exhibits. She seemed to know more about global warming than many meteorologists and her big dream in life was to some day become the weather woman on the Channel Two News.
David was extremely proud of Jessica. Although he had always wanted a son and was admittedly disappointed when Leslieâs sonogram had not shown a penis, he had grown so fond of Jessica that he didnât want to have any other children. Leslie agreed and, shortly after Jessica was born, had gone for the operation to have her tubes tied.
Jessica led David through the museum as if it were her private palace. Then they went to Columbus Avenue for a pizza lunch and they spent the rest of the afternoon at the Hayden Planetarium. By the time they arrived back at their apartment, at around five oâclock, David had had such a good time that heâd forgotten that tomorrow was Monday and that Amy Lee was even alive.
Later, Leslie helped Jessica with her homework and David tried to absorb himself in a proposal he was working on for a client. The client, an Italian jewelry manufacturer, had previously been advertising only in print media, and now wanted to begin an ad campaign for television. David was making his proposal based on demographics he had compiled, along with a suggested budget. It had the potential to turn into a multi-million dollar project, but David could hardly concentrate on his work. He couldnât seem to find a comfortable position in his swivel chair and he kept having to scroll back on his PC to re-read what he had just written.
When he came into the bedroom, Leslie was still awake, turning pages of Allure magazine. She said she wasnât feeling well and didnât think she could make love, which was fine with David. He had trouble falling asleep and finally left the bedroom and went into the living room to watch TV. An infomercial on a new stomach exerciser bored him to sleep. It seemed like only a few minutes later he was awakeâa line of morning sunshine coming through the Venetian blinds was stinging his eyes. It felt like the morning of his execution. He was too exhausted to move and yet his heart was pounding as if he had drunk five mugs of coffee.
Otherwise, it was a typical Monday morning at home. Leslie was busy getting Jessica ready for school and a pot of coffee was waiting for David. Already wearing her mink coat, Leslie came into the kitchen and said, âItâs going to snow today.â
âHow much?â
âThey say ten inches. It depends on how the storm moves up the coast.â
âItâs probably just hype. Those weathermen are all full of shit.
